URGENT: Please Support Our Medical Fund

Please Help if you can!

🆘 Friends, our Medical Fund needs your support urgently! The following is a message from Deborah MacDonald, Executive Director of Angus & Friends Cat Rescue:

We are in dire straits because of several sick cats in our care right now. This has been a very painful and heartbreaking season already, with many cats we have had for some time getting older (we still have these cats because no one has adopted them), and getting sick with dental problems or coming to us in emergency situations. I have had a lot of medical bills for these cats, but we are constantly triaging and the sicker cats, of course, get an inordinate amount of the medical care, and others we have to get to a little later.

But, sometimes it is too late, as it was with Regina, a beautiful 8 year old cat and a great mom cat, but from an area where they did not want her. So, although she was feral and she could not go back out, over time Regina had learned to trust me to a point. I still could not touch her, and I could not get flea meds on her. I did give her Capstar in her food, a safer med that kills adult fleas, but that was all I could do! She stayed in my catio by choice, but only recently let me see how sick she was. Unfortunately, the combination of anemia, bad teeth, and liver problems and inability to eat because of pain in her mouth, meant there was very little I could do to help her! We had to make the hard decision to end Regina’s suffering.

Still, Regina’s bill has to be paid, and sadly, I have a couple of others who are at the same point and money is very tight.

Adoptions have been slow, but we have had a steady but small number of cats getting adopted, like our colony kitten, Cooper, who we brought in, got neutered, vaccinated and chipped, and who was a love bug from the get go! Cooper got a great new home with a big sister kitty and two doting parents!

Despite some very good adoptions, our medical expenses have far exceeded the adoption fees received of late. We usually only make a small amount on our smaller fundraisers, so we find ourselves asking again for your generous donations to help these cats in need. We are at our limit for the foreseeable future as we try to help the cats in our care now.

If you are in a position to donate now, I assure you every penny will go towards doing the right thing for the cats and kittens in our care, whether that means emergency care or end of life decisions. I have to make the hard choices, and I do, but I cannot do it without your help!

If you can help us now when the need is so great, the cats and all of us here at Angus & Friends Cat Rescue will be eternally grateful. Thank you.

Your Donation Helps Us Save Lives

Angus & Friends Cat Rescue is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit rescue organization based in Castro Valley. Our group is named in memory of a 15-year-old orange tabby, Angus, who was found on death's door by people who lived in his neighborhood who assumed he had a home. Angus was homeless, but probably did have a home at one time, because he turned out to be friendly. Angus was very sick from a severe case of flea anemia when we found him. We tried to save him but, sadly, Angus ultimately had to be put down because he was not recovering after a blood transfusion.

As heartbreaking as losing Angus was, those of us in rescue know heartbreak all too intimately.  For all the cats we try to help -- and there are many -- some of those sweet, precious cats that we want to help are beyond veterinary medicine’s ability to save them.  We try to be good stewards of the money we receive from donations, but there are times when we want to do our very best to save a kitty we think is saveable. We rush them to our ER vets at Veterinary  Emergency Group (VEG) in San Ramon, where we have a discount and where they have been extremely generous in trying to help. Yet the ultimate decision is that the kitten or cat is too sick, and we must make the heartbreaking decision to end their suffering.  First and foremost, our goal is that a cat or kitten not suffer, and sometimes even the vets cannot stop whatever process is making a cat sick.

The sad truth is that the vets still need to be paid for the care they have provided, and that comes out of our medical fund.  Our fundraisers are almost always to replenish those funds so we can continue to help others.  We have many who do survive, and that is what keeps us going!  Thus, our ongoing need for donations for medical care!

Please, if you are able to donate to help us help more cats and kittens, we would be extremely grateful, no matter the size, or whether it is a one-time donation, or monthly.  Monthly donations help us plan, and help us allocate funds more efficiently.  Any amount helps, and it is all for the kitties!  Thank you for your kindness and generosity!
